FAQs

therapist providing neuro-affirming therapy in carrollton

Finding the right therapist or assessment provider is a big decision. Here are answers to the questions I hear most often. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact me.

Do you take insurance?

Tanager Counseling is an out-of-network provider. This allows us to maintain the highest level of privacy and flexibility for your care. While we do not bill insurance directly, we can provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Do you offer virtual or in person therapy?

Both. We provide secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions to clients throughout Texas. For those in the Carrollton and North Dallas area, limited in-person sessions may be available upon request at 4425 Plano Pkwy.

Will I know how much therapy costs upfront?

Yes. Under the law, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your medical care will cost. I am transparent about all session rates and assessment fees from the very beginning.

What ages do you see?

I primarily work with teens (13+) and adults. However, I am open to working with children younger than 13 if it feels like a good clinical fit for the family’s needs.

What can I expect in the first session?

Your first session is a calm, conversational space. You don’t need to have a “script” or have everything figured out. We will talk about what has been hardest for you lately and what you hope to gain from our time together. We start exactly where you are.

Is it okay if I don’t know what to talk about in session?

Yes. You don’t have to show up with an agenda. Sometimes the best work happens when we just sit with what is present in the moment. I am here to help guide the conversation and hold the space so you don’t have to “perform.”

How is neuro-affirming therapy different from regular therapy?

In neuro-affirming therapy, we don’t treat your ADHD or autism as something to be cured. Instead, we work with your unique brain to find strategies that actually work for you, while honoring your sensory needs and energy limits.

What if I don’t have a “big-T” trauma? Can I still come to therapy?

Absolutely. Many of my clients feel like they shouldn’t be struggling because others might have had it worse. We focus on how your environment shaped your ability to trust yourself and feel safe. If you feel disconnected or like you’re constantly second-guessing yourself, that is reason enough to seek support.

Do you offer intensive therapy services?

We are currently exploring the addition of trauma therapy intensives. These are longer, focused sessions designed for deeper healing in a shorter timeframe. If you’re interested, please reach out to join our interest list.

Do you offer assessments or testing?

Yes. We provide compassionate, comprehensive assessments for ADHD, Autism, and trauma-related concerns. These evaluations are neuro-affirming and designed to understand your full story, not just “check boxes.”

I’m not sure if I need a full assessment. What should I do?

We recommend starting with an assessment consultation. This is a dedicated space to review your history and determine if a full evaluation is the right avenue for you. You can read more here.

Where can I receive an assessment?

Assessment Consultations: Available to residents anywhere in the USA. This is a great way to gain clarity on your next steps.

Full Diagnostic Assessments: Due to licensing regulations, full diagnostic testing is available to Texas residents only.

What happens if I get a diagnosis? Do you help with the “Now What?”

A diagnosis is often just the beginning. I specialize in post-diagnostic support and helping you process the grief, relief, and identity shifts that come with learning you are neurodivergent. We move from ‘What is wrong with me?’ to ‘How do I build a life that actually fits my brain?’
