Adult ADHD and Autism Assessment in Texas

You may have spent years trying to make sense of patterns that don’t quite add up. You function well in many areas, yet certain things feel harder than they should. You’ve wondered whether it’s anxiety, trauma, ADHD, neurodivergence, or some combination, but haven’t had a clear way to sort it out. Our approach to adult ADHD and autism assessment in Texas is different.

Traditional evaluations often look for what is “broken.” We look for strength-based and neuroaffirming ways to help slow down assessments and look more carefully, without assuming anything is “wrong” with you.

A Neuroaffirming Path to Self-Discovery

Rather than focusing on a single diagnosis, the goal is to understand how your brain, nervous system, relationships, and life experiences interact. For many people, this kind of clarity can be relieving. This collaborative process is designed to honor your lived experience as a high-masking or late-identified individual, whether you are in Carrollton or anywhere in Texas.

An adult ADHD and autism assessment in Texas may be helpful if:

  • You’ve been told conflicting things about what’s going on.
  • You feel like something important has been missed (especially if you were “missed” as a child because of good grades or quiet behavior).
  • You want to understand why certain environments, relationships, or expectations are harder for you.
  • You’re trying to make sense of the overlap between trauma, attention, and emotional regulation.

The Assessment Process

The assessment process is collaborative and paced. It typically includes a comprehensive intake, standardized measures, and time spent integrating results rather than rushing to conclusions. The focus is on context and what these results mean for you, not just what they say on paper.

  • Standardized Measures: We look at your executive function, sensory profile, and social communication through an affirming lens.
  • Integration: We look at how these results explain your life experiences, from workplace burnout to relational patterns.
  • Clarity: Some pursue assessment before starting therapy; others integrate it into ongoing work. Either approach is okay.

The total investment for the Diagnostic Evaluation is $2,000. This includes:

  • Clinical interview

  • Dedicated feedback sessions

  • An out-of-network superbill upon request

We accept credit cards, debit cards, HSA (Health Savings Accounts), and FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts). Payment plans are available upon request.

Is it worth getting an ADHD or autism diagnosis as an adult?

For many, a formal diagnosis provides a “missing piece” to their identity. It can validate years of feeling “different,” explain why certain environments lead to burnout, and provide the necessary documentation for workplace accommodations. Most importantly, it allows you to shift from self-criticism to self-accommodation, helping you build a life that actually fits your brain.

Can you detect ADHD or autism if I’ve spent years “masking” my symptoms?

Yes. Traditional assessments often fail high-masking adults because they focus only on outward behavior. Our neuro-affirming approach looks beneath the surface at the internal effort you use to navigate the world. We focus on your lived experience, sensory processing, and cognitive patterns rather than just how well you “function” in neurotypical spaces.

What is the difference between a medical diagnosis and a neuro-affirming assessment?

A standard medical diagnosis often uses a “deficit model,” focusing on what a person cannot do. A neuro-affirming assessment at Tanager Counseling is a collaborative discovery process. While it provides a formal clinical diagnosis, the goal is to understand your specific nervous system profile and how your brain interacts with your environment, relationships, and history.

How does trauma or CPTSD overlap with ADHD and Autism assessments?

There is significant overlap between neurodivergence and trauma responses. During the evaluation, we carefully differentiate between (and identify the coexistence of) ADHD, Autism, and trauma. Understanding whether a challenge is rooted in executive functioning, sensory processing, or a trauma-related “freeze” response is essential for choosing the right support and therapy moving forward.

How long does the adult assessment process take from start to finish?

The process is intentionally paced to avoid overwhelming your system. It typically includes an initial intake, several hours of standardized testing and clinical interviews, and a dedicated feedback session. You can generally expect the final comprehensive report within 2–4 weeks after our final testing appointment.

Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for an adult assessment in Texas?

Yes. We accept HSA and FSA cards, as well as all major credit and debit cards. While we are an out-of-network provider, we can provide you with a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We also offer flexible payment plans upon request.

Will my diagnosis be recognized by my employer or university?

Yes. Our comprehensive evaluations include standardized measures and clinical interpretations that meet the documentation standards for most workplace HR departments and university disability services. If you have a specific form or requirement for your employer, please let us know during the intake process so we can ensure the final report includes the necessary details.
